October 2011 – Answers to two of my most generally asked questions

In this newsletter:

·        What are therapeutic lifestyle changes?

·        Why hypnosis?

Greetings to you all J

Warmer weather appears to be arriving in the Southern Hemisphere!

I recently took up my own challenge to my clients and started my ten day detoxification program (September newsletter).

I am happy to report that I am not at all hungry! I am also finding that I am getting back in touch with my food again! I find myself really enjoying the clean, clear tastes I am eating and I am also enjoying being more experimental with my cooking.

And to top it all in four days I have lost 1kg and I am sleeping better too!

This detoxification program fits in with the new paths of therapeutic lifestyle changes I am studying, and my use of medical foods in my practise which many of you have asked me about:

Hopefully this will help answer the queries I am getting:

Research shows nutrition and other environmental factors can positively influence health on a cellular level…or negatively influence cells thus leading to chronic illness and obesity. Basically everything we eat is doing us good, or doing us harm!

The growing field of nutritional genomics ("nutrigenomics") recognises that nutritional optimisation can maintain and extend a state of optimal health—even in genetically predisposed individuals.

The Basics of this approach is:

·                     Use therapeutic lifestyle changes to modify dietary signals in your body:
Western diets, foods of convenience, and other unhealthy dietary habits can "muddle" the signals sent to cells throughout the body that then over time leads to obesity, premature aging and chronic illness. What you eat does have a direct influence on how you feel. And addressing those eating patterns allows you to lose weight, manage symptoms and even halt or reverse the progression of any illnesses.

·                     Use medical foods to positively ‘boost’ the effects of therapeutic lifestyle changes:
Medical foods offer an additional approach to lifestyle changes to nutritionally manage specific conditions. A medical food is formulated with macro- and micronutrients that are recognized by scientific principles to support the dietary management of a disease or condition, and is to be administered under the supervision of a physician or licensed healthcare practitioner.

Metagenics has developed industry-leading medical foods for patients with type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, cardiovascular disease issues, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity and other chronic conditions. These products offer a far greater degree of effectiveness than dietary changes alone—helping "boost" the positive signals from life style changes.

Through a twelve week program, most individuals experience a huge shift mentally, emotionally and physically allowing them to lose unwanted weight while also benefiting the body on a deeper health and cellular level.

I have added hypnosis to the ‘pot’ of therapeutic lifestyle changing ‘tools’ further assisting my clients in shifting deep seated negative behaviour patterns and reducing stress while keeping them on track with their health goals.

Which leads to the next question I am often asked: why hypnosis?

Hypnosis is one of the most misunderstood (and effective!) tools for self-change available in the world today.

Hypnosis is simply this: a relaxed state of focused attention that allows people to control and change mental and physiological patterns that can't be changed in everyday awareness.

The use of hypnosis to treat disease (also called "hypnotherapy") has been around for more than half a century. In fact, the British Medical Association approved the use of hypnotherapy in 1955. The American Medical Association approved its use in 1958.

Numerous clinical studies have proven that hypnosis is amazingly effective in helping people lose weight:

·        In a 9-week study of two weight management groups (one using hypnosis and one not using hypnosis), the hypnosis group continued to get results in the two-year follow-up, while the non-hypnosis group showed no further results (Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985).

·        In a study of 60 women separated into hypnosis versus non-hypnosis groups, the groups using hypnosis lost an average of 8 kilograms, while the non-hypnosis group lost an average of only half a kilogram (Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1986).

·        In a meta-analysis, comparing the results of adding hypnosis to weight loss treatment across multiple studies showed that adding hypnosis increased weight loss by an average of 97% during treatment, and even more importantly increased the effectiveness POST TREATMENT by over 146%. This shows that hypnosis works even better over time (Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1996).

So how effective is hypnosis counselling?

A survey of psychotherapy literature by psychologist Alfred A. Barrios, Ph.D. revealed the following recovery rates:

Psychoanalysis: 38% recovery after 600 sessions.
Behavior Therapy: 72% recovery after 22 sessions.
Hypnotherapy: 93% recovery after 6 sessions.

So in a nutshell between hypnotherapy and therapeutic lifestyle changes with medical foods, you are guaranteed positive change and your health and weight loss goals become attainable.
