July/August 2011 – Why
bother......................?! .
Hello to you all!
Firstly, please forgive this late newsletter. My laptop AND
backups were stolen so it has been a rather ‘interesting’ time
getting up and running again!
IF I
have accidentally
sent this to you and you have unsubscribed in the past –
huge apologies – I am
working off an old data base. Please forgive me the error (this
once!) and please unsubscribe again.
We all want to look good, and no one likes the feeling of
being sick or lacking energy or feeling like our brain is filled
with sludge! Our health, weight and general well being are the sum
total of our choices; and we can decide right here and now to
improve our energy levels as well as the way we feel and look.
Generally we are told to do the same three or four things
by magazines, TV shows, doctors, dieticians and personal trainers
and others – exercise, manage stress, eat healthily and supplement!
A “new” you is created every eleven months on a cellular level.
Let’s look at how these topics can assist you in making that newer
version of you fitter, slimmer and healthier :
So
J
...........................
Why bother exercising?
In a nutshell is can almost be seen as a miracle
prescription!
Thirty minutes of exercise 3 x per week can be just as
effective as drug therapy in relieving symptoms of mild – moderate
depression.
It increases:
·
your basal metabolic rate
·
your strength and endurance
·
lean muscle while decreasing your body fat percentage
·
bone density (very important if you are heading towards/ or have
osteoporosis)
·
energy and vitality
It improves:
·
Insulin sensitivity (which decreases your chances of metabolic x syndrome
and diabetes)
·
Sleep
·
Mental sharpness and concentration
·
Your aerobic capacity
·
Your resting heart rate
It also normalises blood pressure and reduces stress and
cholesterol levels!
Why bother eating healthily?
Simply, what we put in our body on a day to day basis, in
the long run is going to create weight problems and disease, or keep
us healthy and slim.
A growing body of research suggests that a Mediterranean
style diet – low in calories and rich in nutrient dense whole
grains, legumes, healthy proteins and vegetables – may help fight
conditions related to obesity and chronic inflammation including
metabolic syndrome, cardio vascular disease, high blood pressure,
type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance to name a few.

The wonderful thing about the Mediterranean diet is that you
are not dieting! This is a healthy lifestyle plan, filled with
choice and leaving you feeling full and satisfied.
Why bother supplementing?
As far back as1932 the US Congress was given a report by
scientists explaining how soil no longer provided plants with the
minerals that are essential to human nourishment and nutritional
health. Eighty years later, on top of poor soil, and increased
stress, we are also eating far less vegetables and fruits and have a
diet much higher in processed foods and simple carbohydrates.
When we become deficient in vitamins and minerals, disorders
and diseases occur and it becomes harder to lose weight.
And in our busy modern life’s incorporating targeted
nutrition (Medical Food Supplements - not diet shakes!) with an
effective lifestyle intervention can produce results up to 8 times
faster than dietary changes and exercise alone. These changes
include changes in cholesterol levels, blood pressure, insulin
levels, body fat levels and general wellbeing.
I am proud to now offer Metagenics Medical Foods and Dr
Kathleen Hartford’s 12 week rejuvenation program. This is a holistic
approach to healthy living by decreasing the biomarkers of
biological aging while reducing fat-to-lean-muscle ratio at the same
time.
All Medical Foods are available through me, or I can advice you what
to get from Wellness Warehouse if you prefer.
Why bother changing your stress levels?
For
years, many people have suspected that stress and obesity are linked
— and now scientific research has found evidence to support this
connection. Specific biochemical reactions (hormone changes) from
stress increase the chances of obesity and also make it harder to
lose weight.
Even small amounts of
unchecked stress can lead to increased health problems over time as
it decreases our body’s immune fighting abilities while increasing
the chances of chronic disease. Stress is becoming the biggest
reason for Doctor’s visits in the Western World.
Changing your stress
levels doesn’t mean quitting your job and going and sitting on top
of the highest mountain! It is about incorporating daily tools that
assist in keeping you healthier and more able to cope.
Way’s to decrease the effects of
stress on our lives:
·
Prioritise (ask
yourself, what is the worst that may happen if I don’t do this
task/if I’m 5 minutes late/if I say no etc?)
·
Set new priorities
(eliminate, decrease, put off and delegate)
·
Solve problems
·
Take time to relax
each day
·
Breathe (deeply, from
your belly)
·
Limit caffeine intake
(tea, coffee and chocolate)
·
Meditate
·
Change your routine
·
Keep things in
perspective
·
Laugh
·
Call a friend
·
Be creative
·
Look at your diet
·
Sing/dance
·
Exercise
·
Surround yourself
with supportive, life enhancing people
·
Have a massage
·
Do something (from
your heart) for someone else
·
Get a good night’s
sleep.
We all have our share of stress but
not everyone reacts the same way to stressors. In fact, leading
experts have identified 6 common stress responses:
·
Occasionally stressed
·
Stressed & tired
(physical or mental fatigue)
·
Stressed & wired
(restless)
·
Stressed & hot
("burnout" with aches and stiffness)
·
Stressed & mentally
exhausted
·
Stressed & worried
(agitated)
If you email me,
- I can send you the Identi-T™
Stress—Personalized Stress Relief Questionnaire to fill out and
return to me.
If is possible to get stress relief
with this simple, effective program. This personalized program helps
you manage your unique type of stress response in 3 easy steps.
NB: Seek help or advice
if any of the above feels unattainable – either from a coach, your
GP, therapist, dietician, nutritionist, personal trainer,
hypnotherapist, Minister etc.
Remember - you are not a
compartmentalised machine – you are a constantly changing being
whose parts are all interrelated and adapting to each other every
second of every day. Every thought, every feeling and everything you
eat or do impacts on the functioning of the rest of you. By taking
small baby steps each day to enhance your health either through
reducing stress, eating well, exercising or supplementing will
increase your chances of being fitter, thinner, healthier and
happier.
Wishing you happy, healthy days ahead
Best Wishes

Self-acceptance comes from meeting life's challenges vigorously.
Don't numb yourself to your trials and difficulties, nor build
mental walls to exclude pain from your life. You will find peace not
by trying to escape your problems, but by confronting them
courageously. You will find peace not in denial, but in victory.
